Episode 16 - Why Primary Care Needs Occupational Therapists

Suzy, Cheryl and Lister, First Contact Practitioner Occupational Therapists from Northwich PCN shared how their role is transforming community care.

Over the past four years, OT in primary care has become a vital part of the multidisciplinary team, offering proactive, preventative and holistic support across clinics, home visits and care homes.

The session highlighted how OTs bridge gaps in care, supporting long-term conditions, improving access to memory assessments, reducing inequalities, and helping people return to work, while looking beyond the traditional 10-minute GP appointment.

A powerful patient story brought this to life, showing how building confidence and addressing anxiety restored independence and significantly improved quality of life.

The impact is clear: reduced GP workload, faster diagnosis, shorter waits, and stronger team collaboration across primary care.
