Joy at Work – Why it matters

The evidence and research behind fostering joy at work reinforces that it is most effective when it is voluntary and driven by those who are ready and motivated to embrace change. Workplaces should focus on creating an environment of fairness and support, where employees feel valued and empowered to engage in initiatives that enhance their experiences such as joy at work. This approach not only facilitates successful change implementation but also contributes to a positive and sustainable workplace culture.

GP retention, Nursing retention & Practice Manager retention Surveys at Place show us that the majority participants voted JOY AT WORK as MOST important to career and in some cases more important than work pressures, protected time & pay. Research shows us the importance and science of Joy at Work and how it plays a huge part in safety, productivity and job satisfaction.

Joy At Work Toolkit

Working in general practice can be demanding — but small changes can make a big difference. The Joy at Work Toolkit, created by our very own Director of Joy, is designed specifically for general practice teams. Everything from practical tips, simple activities, evidence-based strategies and studies to boost your wellbeing and morale.

Cheshire & Merseyside General Practice Surveys

Starting in 2023, The Cheshire and Merseyside Training Hub, along with ICB Place Leads launched a series of surveys across the General Practice Workforce. Common themes emerged from the surveys one of the most prolific themes was Joy At Work. Our GP and Nursing workforce said that Joy at Work was most important to career. Practice Managers also ranked joy at work ‘highly important’ to career.

In 2021–2022, the Royal College of Psychiatrists led a national quality improvement programme involving 38 healthcare teams across England and Wales, focused on boosting staff wellbeing and joy in work. The results were powerful:

  • 51% increase in staff who frequently enjoyed being at work

  • 41% increase in those reporting no symptoms of burnout

  • 42% increase in staff highly likely to recommend their team as a great place to work

These outcomes show that investing in joy at work leads to reduced burnout and greater staff satisfaction — both essential for delivering safe, high-quality patient care.

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) highlights the value of creating work environments where staff feel supported and appreciated. When the East London NHS Foundation Trust applied the IHI framework, over 6,000 staff experienced stronger team cohesion and greater job satisfaction — outcomes that also enhance patient safety and care quality.

What Drives Joy at Work?

What drives Joy at work?

  1. Harmony
  2. Impact
  3. Acknowledgement

Harmony comes from each team member playing to their strengths, working together toward a shared goal. This collaboration creates real impact — those moments when everything clicks, and teams achieve something meaningful together. And when we take time for acknowledgement — celebrating each other’s contributions — we fuel a powerful cycle of joy, connection, and continued success.
