Introduction to Phlebotomy

February 8, 2023 @ 9:30 am - 4:30 pm

This is an interactive course enabling participants to explore the concepts around taking blood from patients for diagnostic testing in a clinical setting.

A comprehensive competency checklist will be provided to take back into the workplace and complete whilst undertaking supervised practice. Training is compliant with the WHO Guidelines for phlebotomy practice  criteria.

This course will cover all the basics and background needed to start practicing under supervision. Whether you are learning phlebotomy theory virtually or in a practical face to face course, the recommendation is always to have a period of supervised practice in your workplace afterwards with an experienced colleague. The benefits of completing online learning means more time for theory, and delegates often feed back that being able to solely focus on the rationales behind phlebotomy is a great first step to becoming competent.  The content here will therefore provide you with a solid foundation for getting involved with all the physical elements of this important skill, in preparation for developing your practical skills after you have completed the course.

To get the most out of the course it is recommended (but not compulsory) to have some of your  workplace phlebotomy equipment to hand during the course, such as needles and sample vials. This will enhance the  experience for those who want to see and handle the things physically that we will be talking about.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

¨ Describe the anatomy and physiology of veins and select common anatomical areas for locating veins

¨ Describe how to keep the procedure as safe and effective as possible and prevent needlestick injuries

¨ Explain the use of different types of techniques and equipment available, including use of straight and butterfly needles and different types of  manufacturer features

¨ Address and identify complications that can arise when performing phlebotomy

¨ Know what to do next regarding gaining and demonstrating competency once back in the workplace

¨ Discuss the various roles and responsibilities of the practitioner who takes blood

¨ Access the national guidance around blood taking evidence bases
